The westernmost of the old Greater Manchester councils, Wigan is an area I’m enttirely unfamiliar with. Once again an FC United match took me here, for a friendly vs Atherton Collieries. The short walk to the ground passed a rather dishevelled looking monument that I’ve been unable to find much about. I shall add more to this section of course, but this first one is frustratingly puzzling. Apologies to the people of Atherton, Leigh, Tyldsley etc. I’m sure you won’t mind being lumped in with Wigan.
