The Butte de Warlencourt is a man made hill that affords a tremendous viewpoint of the battlefield. The Germans fortified the hill and defended it tenaciously through the Somme Offensives. The hill stayed in German hands until their eventual retreat to defend the Hindenburg Line in early 1917.
Today the hill is owned by the Western Front Association and is a memorial to the men who fought and died here, and still to this day contains men who died here with no marker.
The Western Front Association do good work all over the battlefields of France and Belgium and hold informative talks and produce quality publications for their members. More can be seen about them on their website here.
