There are several features at the Carrefour de la Rose. The Francis Ledwidge memorial, the memorial to the French divisions who fought in the area, and a British cemetery.
Francis Ledwidge was an Irish poet born in Slane, County Meath in 1891. He joined up in 1914 and saw action in Salonika and Gallipoli before arriving at the Ypres salient in 1917. He was killed on Pilckem Ridge by a direct hit from a shell. His most pertinent poem was Soliloquy, the last four lines struck a chord with many soldiers.
