A memorial to the International Brigade. It reads: "To the honour and memory of the Leicester members of the International Brigade who died fighting fascism in Spain 1936 - 1939 Fred Sykes - Jarama 1937 Jack Watson - Jarama 1937 Roy Watts - Ebro 1938 Spain No Pasaran!"
No Pasaran was (and is) a rallying call for anti-fascists and is taken in this context from Dolores Ibárruri Gómez's speach during the siege of Madrid during the war. It literally means none shall pass and was taken from a French general's speech during the battle of Verdun in WW1.
