The third destination in the day was the famous town of St. Mére-Eglise. It features heavily in the film "The Longest Day", with scenes concerning Private John Steele being foremost. His parachute became entangled on the church tower, and he dangled for a long time before being captured by the Germans. He later escaped.
On the day we were there, the town was a hive of activity. There was a celebratory air around with a large number of street stalls and people dressed in U.S military garb everywhere. We availed ourselves of the huge suspended barbecues and street vendors selling superb draught beer to keep us going then made our way through the town to the distinctive church and on to the Airborne Museum.
