On the outskirts of Ploegsteert Wood is the village of St. Yvon. It’s more well known for an incident than it’s name. The much discussed Christmas Truce of 1914 occurred here when German soldiers sang Silent Night to initiate an impromptu ceasefire. The British and German soldiers swapped tobacco and souvenirs. All units who participated in it were removed from the front and an end was called to the unofficial truce.
