The village of St. Juliaan was in the hands of both sides at various times, but is most remembered for the gas attacks of 1915. Eighteen thousand Canadians faced this new weapon, two thousand of them falling victim to it. The hugely impressive memorial stands thirty five feet tall and is carved from a single piece of granite. It dominates the small park it stands in and is one of the most memorable statues I’ve seen.
