Our close relations over the Irwell. Salford is a settlement of long standing and became a city in its own right in 1926. It has a proud tradition of raising armies and the Salford Pals fought late in WW1 in the Lancashire Fusiliers. They were heavily involved in the carnage at Thiepval on the Somme.

There was four pals battalions raised in Salford. The four were known as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Salford Pals, however their official titles were, respectively, 15th, 16th, 19th and 20th (Service) Battalion, the Lancashire Fusiliers.
