The day had brightened up a little by the time we got to Pozières. The place is packed with memorials and places to see and we spent the best part of the day here.
During the war the first tanks used set off from the edge of the town. The area was largely inhabited by Australian troops and as such, the memorials reflect this. Also in the village is the famous Tommy pub with its cheap food and expensive museum. You can visit its website here.
At the other end of the village there’s a huge Commonwealth cemetery which attests to the fierce fighting that took place for the ground stretching from the top of the Ancre valley.
