Ploegsteert, or Plugstreet as the British soldiers called it was an important site in the battles of the Ypres salient. It is the southernmost outpost of the salient, and the wood near the town saw extremely fierce fighting. Stationed here include the famous names of Winston Churchill, A.A. Milne (the creator of Winnie The Pooh) and Bruce Bairnsfather (a celebrated cartoonist). Luckily for us, the dry weather had once more settled in, so yesterday’s uncomfortable travelling was soon forgotten. |
