Peronne is one of the larger towns of the Somme region and a bustling place compared to many of the sleepy villages. There is a superb museum The Historial de la Grande Guerre in the town. It attempts to tell the shattering effect the war had on the civilians, soldiers and children of the area using personal trinkets and clothing of the time.
Also exhibited are a large number of sketches drawn by Otto Dix, a German student who volunteered for the front line and as can be seen by his disturbing pictures, was profoundly affected.
We spent the best part of a morning in and around Peronne. A few beers and the obligatory kebab was had, and a nice sunny day added to the holiday as we sat out on the pavements with our beers and coffees.
During the war the Germans treated it much as the British and French did with Amiens. Relaxation, recuperation and recreation were all to be had here for the weary German men.
The musuem has a website which can be found here.
