One of the most notorious battles of British military history was played out around the village of Passchendaele north east of Ypres.
Between July and August of 1917 over three hundred thousand British and Empire troops were lost in the fighting, only for the ground gained to be given up in the early months of 1918 to shorten the defensive line. A seemingly terrible waste of life, and one of the main reasons for the “lions lead by donkeys” tag that was in some ways unfairly given.
The day was going from bad to worse for us. The rain was incessant, and we were all soaked to the skin. There was one incident in particular where it was left to Lance to represent us, and he did so admirably.
