In the civilian cemetery over the lane from the war cemetery lies this grave. Captain Lipmann-Kessel was a South African surgeon who was the leader of a team of surgeons in the Elizabeth hospital in Arnhem. He carried on as the Germans closed in and was taken prisoner on the 18th September, but escaped on the 10th February 1945. Brigadier Lathbury recommended him for the Military Cross with the following statement: "This officer has a great reputation for his gallantry, skill and devotion to duty while carrying out his work under the most difficult and dangerous conditions on many occasions. I recommend him most strongly for the immediate award of the Military Cross." He was also awarded an MBE.
