There is much to see in the Messines area, including an unexpected extra that will probably be gone for other visitors. I’d thoroughly recommend the The Tower pub in the town square. The landlord was a mine of information, gave us maps of the area, produced a hearty soup, and had a barmaid with the most smiles per second I’ve ever seen. He asked us where we were heading, then gave us directions to a newly discovered bunker nearby. We never would have spotted it, and it was a superb thing to see such a newly discovered piece of archaeology. It was the end of another long day, but it would have been a shame to have missed the many sights of the town. The only downside was that the museum had shut for the year just the day before. |
