The first port of call on our third day was in the beautiful town of La Roche. It’s very touristy, but in a far classier way than Bastogne. Admittedly, it’s setting gives it a huge advantage and a ruined castle only adds to it’s charm, so maybe the comparision is harsh.

La Roche was the scene of a famous meeting during the war. British and American troops met up here for the first time and signalled the end of German hopes. The German plan had been to seperate the two armies and push through to the coast at Antwerp. With this symbolic meeting the plan was scuppered.

The museum in La Roche was an interesting place. There are many exhibits donated by British troops who served in the area along with their tales and photographs of the men as they were in the war, and as they are now. A very nice touch.
