Director: Alain Resnais
Starring: Yves Montand, Ingrid Thulin, Genevieve Bujold.
A communist revolutionary dreams of over throwing Franco’s government. To aid his dream he smuggles pamphlets and worse from France into Spain. He has become jaded with his life, until he meets Nadine (Bujold).
He is revitalised, but tstill knows it’s a futile struggle. Does he warn the enthusiastic youngster of the pitfalls ahead, or encourage her youthful energy? Adding to his dilemma is his relationship with Marianne (Thulin) and her desire for a life with a little more order and normality.
To be frank, I found this rather dull. The performances are excellent, but the story, despite my sympathies with the subject matter didn’t hold my attention. One for fans of the director, or French cinema of the 1960s only I’d expect.
