Up until now the visit had been largely a normal sight seeing tour. Two of the lads had been to these sites before but when we entered La Cambe it really hit home to me the destruction that was involved.
The scene before you is surreal.
Row upon row of graves of mostly young men who all died within a few weeks of each other.
The cemetery has the remains of over 21,000 German soldiers. The ground is peppered with groups of five black crosses. These are many, but then you notice the tiles in between, each of which has two names on.
It was a moving experience, but would be overshadowed in scale the next day.
It's a very peaceful place, with even the nearby motorway silenced. The drive up to the cemetery is along a road flanked with maple trees all bearing a small plaque with the names of sponsors.
One of these gave me an unexpected, but pleasant surprise and is included in the following pictures.
