Kemmel is half way between our base of Meteren and Ypres. It lies just over the border in Belgium and is situated on one of the hills of Flanders. The view from Kemmel Hill gives a panorama of the plains around.
It was the scene of a major battle in April 1918 when a thinly held British line held off the German attack. They were relieved by French soldiers shortly after who succumbed to gas and the hill was taken by the Germans. They held it until August when the Allied offensive that would lead to the end of the war was launched.
