The last few sites of the day were taken at a much steadier pace. The light was fading fast, as was our stamina. It’d been a long day, and the Cafe Heertje was a welcome stop. The whole area was the scene of fierce fighting and false dawns. The inhabitants of the surrounding areas had heard of the approaching Allied forces and were hanging welcoming banners, and nationalistic, orange Dutch flags in anticipation. In many cases the forward reconnaissance units had to tell the locals to remove them as it could be some time before they arrived in numbers and could offer support.
