Hill 60 is an artificial structure formed when the displaced soil and clay from the nearby railway cutting was placed here.
It was the site of intense fighting and extensive mining throughout the war and was to change hands a number of times. Because of the nature of the fighting in the area, there are many soldiers still lying undiscovered in the ruins of the hill. The Commonweatlh War Graves Commision look after the site and it does well to reflect on this when surveying the scene.
There was a museum on the hill, but unfortunately it was closed for renovation work when we were there and is planned to re-open as a cafe. There are no plans currently to show the museum exhibits in the new venture.
