The last three stops of a long day were at the villages of Flers, Montauban and Longueval. These villages all saw ferocious fighting, and were the deepest the Allies hoped to get to in what became known as The Battle of Flers-Courcelette. Men of regiments from Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Leicester fought alongside New Zealanders and were the first to go into battle with tanks as support.

The tanks were spread along the front and lacked any kind of impact after the initia shock of seeing these huge metal beasts. They were easy prey for the accurate German artillery and were used before the planned date leading to the element of surprise being lost.

Montauban in particular held a special place for us all due to its unique memorial.
