For the first two years of the war the canal area was an artillery position as it was five miles to the rear of the front lines. The lines changed frequently bringing the canal area nearer the front, but it never changed hands. The 38th Welsh Division and the 49th West Riding Division were the principal inhabitants of the area. Note the poppy motif on the table. This was prevalent throughout the trip.
