The first big city to lie in the path of the liberating land forces was Eindhoven. The home of Philips amongst others, Eindhoven was, and still is a major industrial centre. Unfortunately in one way, we chose to visit on some kind of bank holiday which included a marathon.

Large areas were cordoned off, and it was hard to find anything. With a bit of lateral thinking (and unauthorised marathon route crossing) we managed to get to most things we intended. On the other hand, it was very lively, with lots of street vendors and stalls adding to the day. What it didnt add to was getting out of the place. Just as we thought we’d got our bearings, the police were at the end of the road we needed waving us back. It wasn’t a good start to the day.
