This portion of the day was spent in the British and Polish landing zones and drop zones. I’d read about the distance they were from Arnhem, but it really hit home when we drove the same journey. It was a pleasant Autumn day when we were there and the only things we had to carry were cameras. The paratroops who landed in this area had to fight their way along the roads and through the woods carrying all the supplies they needed.
Ginkel Heath is largely the same as it was in 1944. The roads are a little busier, and the buildings have more signs, but it was easy to imagine the sight of the gliders hurtling to the heath. There was also a sizeable modern Dutch military presence on the day we visited. The modern day versions were carrying out the same tasks as the British did 61 years before.
