Driel is a small village on the banks of the Rhine. There are two churches and a ferry which feature heavily in the Market Garden story. The ferry was largely ignored during the planning, and afterwards it was speculated that it could have been used to great effect. During the battle it was still being used by locals to transport bread from a bakery and workers to and from their jobs.

Grave was the site of one of the key bridges that had to be taken to pave a way for the tanks of XXX Corps. The task was given to the men of the 82nd Airborne led by Lieutenant John S. Thompson.
