Our first stop of the whole holiday surely ranks as one of the prettiest places we’ve visited. Clervaux is in Luxembourg and was at the brunt of the early German offensive. The American troops stationed here thought they were in a backwater of the war, but instead bore the full brunt of a desperate last throw of the dice.

The soldiers here did a sterling job holding up the advance. The later heroics in Bastogne wouldn’t have been more than token resistance without this first line of defiance.

Today, Clervaux is a gorgeous little town nestled in the valleys of northern Luxembourg. During the war, the US 28th Division were sent here to rest after the fierce fighting in the Hurtgen Forest. It was extremely bad luck to be placed in the path of one of the most desperate and determined offensives of the war, but they held the Germans up manfully and delayed the advanced by crucial hours.

My fellow travellers.
