On our first day out in the car we headed towards Utah Beach. On the way we stopped off for a visit to Carentan. It features heavily in the superb television series "Band Of Brothers". As we were to discover for many of the towns we visited or passed through in our time here, it was largely destroyed during the war.
We arrived very early, and the town was pretty quiet. The preparations for the festivities and ceremonies were evident. The morning was much cooler than yesterday, and I was beginning to regret my choice of shorts, so a coffee in a warm café was very welcome. Our short walk round the town took in the main square, the impressive Notre Dame church, and the main shopping street, which had the most pre-war buildings in the town.
