The Brandenburg Gate

This was begun in 1788 and modelled on Athen's Acropolis. It was one of a series of gates which were the only ways into the city in days gone by. It was commissioned by Friedrich Wilhelm II as a sign of peace and built by Carl Gotthard Langhans.
