In the hills surrounding the city of Nijmegen are a number of small villages. Our time in Holland was spent in Berg-en-Dal. It’s a lovely, prosperous place now, but during the war was a site of ferocious fighting in the heavily wooded area known as de Duivelsberg, or Devil’s Hill. The area, going against the popular image of Holland is quite hilly (Berg-en-Dal translates as Mount and Valley) and made for difficult conditions for the men fighting there.

Our time here was altogether more pleasant, and we made ourselves thoroughly at home in the local pubs, and the pancake house opposite Tivoli, with Laura the waitress and her colleague making a particular impression.
