Bastogne is probably the place in the battle most people have heard of. From The Battle of the Bulge starring Henry Fonda to the mini-series Band of Brothers, Bastogne has always had a special place in the hearts of all those who are interested in military history. The town was besieged and completely encircled by the advancing Germans. For seven days in harsh wintry conditions the Americans largely made up of lightly armed paratroopers of the 101st Airborne Division fought the enemy and saved the town from capture. Today it’s a busy place compared to the majority of places we visit, but it was a little shabby and festooned with cheap tourist trappings. It had a quality pub though. |
