The Salford Pals memorial.
The Lancashire Fusiliers had four Pals battalions from Salford amongst their numbers. They were at the forefront of the 1916 attacks and suffered terribly at the hands of the German machine guns.
Of the 674 men, 470 were casualties. Attacking with the Salford Pals were the Northumberland Fusiliers who suffered an equally grim fate.
