The tale of Anne Boleyn and her stormy and tragic relationship with Henry VIII. I don’t know how historically accurate it is, but it’s great entertainment, which after all is what a film should be.
Genevieve Bujold won the Golden Globe, and an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of the doomed queen. She was picked to bear the king a male heir, but when things don’t go to plan, she soons finds herself out of favour and fighting for her life. It’s a brutal story, and Richard Burton gives an excellent performance as the hard hearted and callous king.
As I say, I don’t know if it’s true, and given the time, maybe it’s my perspective that gives me this view. But all in all, it’s a brilliant film, and coming from someone who can’t normally abide period dramas, that’s high praise indeed.
Elizabeth Taylor makes an unbilled appearance as a masked woman who interupts Queen Katherine’s prayers.
