Philips Park. Ada Grant from Harpurhey aged twenty three of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Early in the war the ATS were used to support the regular army and provided vital roles including cooks, clerks, telephonists and storekeepers. But as the war progressed, more demanding roles were taken on by the women of the regiment including radar operators, military police, gun crews, and a multitude of operational support tasks. By the end of the war there were over 190,000 members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service.
