To the north of Bastogne in a line along the old main road to Houffalize lie the villages of Foy, Noville and Rachamps. These three sites were hugely significant to E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Divison.

The book and then series Band of Brothers shot these men to fame long after their deeds should have earned them the plaudits, and Easy company became a sensation when most men were in their seventies and eighties. Their fame sometimes seems a little unfair on the thousands of other men who no doubt fought just as well and with as much bravery, but Band of Brothers is ace, so that’s just the way it goes.

Today the remnants of their stay can still be seen in the Bois Jacques (Jacques Wood) without too much effort or trekking. We decided to re-enact the hostilities when Lance thought it amusing to launch pine cones at us.
